« Recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights in Asia : issues at stake », a conference with Raja Devasish Roy, Paris, Tuesday 30th of October 2012 - 30 octobre 2012

SOGIP program in partnership with Groupe International de Travail pour les Peuples Autochtones (GITPA), has organised a conference in english entitled « Recognition of indigenous peoples’ rights in Asia : issues at stake » » with Raja Devasish Roy, a member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, between 2011 and 2013 and an indigenous representative of Asia.

This conference will take place on Tuesday 30 october 2012, 3pm-5pm at EHESS, Salle du Conseil A, 190, Avenue de France, 75013 Paris.


As part of a european tour, Raja Devasish Roy will be speaking about the situation of indigenous peoples in Asia, and more specifically in the indian subcontinent. The case study of the Jummas of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh will serve as a base for a wider debate on recognition of Indigenous peoples in a part of the world where the expression itself is still much debated. Raja Devasish Roy will share with us his extremely rich experience in the field of rights, national and international negociations at the United Nations : Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Commission on Human Rights and Commission on sustainable development.

Raja Devasish Roy is chief of the Administrative Circle of the Chakma, the main group of the Jumma people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh and the traditional raja of the Chakma community. A trained advocate, he has been at the supreme of Bangladesh since 1991 and has worked in the field of human rights for more than 20 years. He acted as negociator during the talks between the government of Bangladesh and the political representative body of the CHT, the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti, which led to the peace agreements of December 1997. He served in the Interim Government where he was in charge of the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and the Ministry of Forest and Environment, from 2008 to 2009. Devasish Roy is the author of many publications on indigenous rights, sustainable development and conflit resolution at the local, regional and international levels.
